“Recent state budget cuts have left our most vulnerable populations, children, the sick and the elderly, out of the circle of protection our government affords. We can no longer stand by and watch assistance be denied to those who need it most.”
Vicki Lorenz Englund, Democratic Candidate for the 85th Legislative District, represents all that is good about south St. Louis County. A south county native, Vicki attended St. Catherine Laboure grade school, Lindbergh High School and was the first member of her family to attend college. The daughter of a Vietnam veteran and a Transportation Department employee, Vicki worked hard to pay her own way through college and graduated with a combined Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts Degree in Political Science from The American University in Washington, D.C.
Vicki made the most of the opportunities that going to college in Washington, D.C. afforded her. In 1992 she volunteered for the Clinton-Gore campaign and in 1993 worked as an intern for Congressman Dick Gephardt who served at the time as House Majority Leader. In 1997 Vicki accepted a position with the Small Business Administration. While with the SBA, Vicki worked hard on behalf of small business owners writing legislation and monitoring bills on Capitol Hill. She saw first hand how small business owners are affected by government policies. Those issues deeply affected Vicki and do to this day being a small business owner herself. She started www.giftpakexpress.com in 1999 and continues this enterprise today.

As a nurse and community advocate, I've heard countless pleas for repairing our health care system. As a Webster Groves City Councilmember, I have listened to my neighbors concerns about property tax assessments and the undermining of public schools. State policies directly impact our daily lives and I want to make sure the impact is positive and that it benefits as many as possible. The bottom line is that people want and deserve approachable and practical government. My vision for my home state starts with strong public education that means early childhood education through higher education opportunities for those willing and able. And I think Missouri can be a leader in supporting science and research and in providing comprehensive health care. That's why I will use my medical background to address the pitfalls in our health care system and support stem cell research. Missouri could be a leader in public transportation in the Midwest and could become known for its reliable infrastructure, fresh air, pure water and clean energy. These things will attract more employers to Missouri and that's good for everyone. From where I stand, good governance is thoughtful, transparent and inclusive. I will work hard to make sure that people affected by the decisions made in Jeff City can get their two cents in when it counts, not after the fact.

“Having integrity isn’t a plaque on the wall. It is everyday choices between right and wrong, good and bad that determines our integrity. It is staying in communication with friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers so they truly ‘know’ who we are.” Deb has been a small business owner for over ten years. In 2003 she started Des Peres Physical Therapy. As a small business owner she is aware of the issues that surround small business in today’s competitive corporate environment, increasing business taxes, raising health care costs and the growth and development of our communities. Deb joined the Kirkwood Area Chamber of Commerce in 2004 to participate in a group of people committed to their communities. Deb will work to improve small business policies affected by state government. While treating her patients, Deb has encountered many problems with our current healthcare insurance system. She is critically aware of patients who come with ever increasing out of pocket co-pays and the denial of services. Many patients with healthcare do not have physical therapy services covered, and 47 million Americans no longer have any health care coverage. Healthcare is an important issue with Deb, and she will work to find solutions.
