Endorsed Candidates - Missouri House of Representatives

Text Box: House District 73: Hon. Stacey Newman

“I bring a combination of experience representing teachers, children and families. Whether it's fighting for equitable funding for our education system or ensuring our students have the resources necessary to learn, I am committed to improving the quality of life for Missourians. In the State Legislature, I will work to make positive improvements to our education system and to address educationally related areas like healthcare and job development. I will also continue the progressive leadership of Representative Clint Zweifel and fight for working families and women's rights.”

Margo successfully ran for the St. Louis Community College Board of Trustees in 2006. As a Trustee, Margo is responsible for approving the approximately $140 million budget and collaborating on the strategic plan for the college. During her time on the Board of Trustees, a new chancellor was hired and the college passed its national accreditation – a process that happens every ten years.

Margo has been involved in our community's civic activities for over 20 years. An active MNEA member, Margo served on the Legislative Committee and was the Government Relations (GR) Chair for the past eleven years. She represented three school districts in this role as GR chair. In 2002, Margo was the Ferguson Florissant coordinator for the "Kids First" Rally in Jefferson City and recruited 200 people from her school district to lobby for increased public education funding. As the St. Louis Coordinator of the Women's Vote Project in 1984, she led efforts to register over 8000 new voters. Additionally, Margo has been an active member of NOW and was a founding member of Missouri Women's Network.

Text Box: House District 79: Mary Nichols

Mary Nichols has come up through the ranks of the Democratic Party.  Mary is currently in her 4th term on the Maryland Heights City Council. She is the Chairman of the Public Relations Committee and also serves on the Public Improvement Committee and the Parks and Recreation Committee.

The need for a responsive government was one reason for the 1984-85 drive to incorporate Maryland Heights. Mary Nichols acted as the volunteer coordinator in that campaign. She organized the drive to get the signatures on the incorporation petition, to get the many volunteers to go door to door to talk about incorporation, and to cover the polls on Election Day.  Mary volunteered her services to the interim government after the incorporation and was proud to be selected to serve on the administrative committee. This committee was given the important task of locating a site for city hall and recommending a form of government.

After the 1985 Incorporation when the Maryland Heights Township lines were drawn, Mary was appointed the first Democratic Committeewoman. She and State Representative Al Liese, who was appointed the first Maryland Heights Township Democratic Committeeman, formed the new Maryland Heights Democratic Township Club.

Mary Nichols was the manager of the Project 90’s program sponsored by the St. Louis County Democratic Central Committee in the early 1990’s. This was a coordinated campaign effort to assist all Democratic candidates running in St. Louis County.  Mary played an active role in the reelection of the Democratic State Representative of the present 79th District in 1982 and 1984 and was the campaign manager for that race in 1986.

Mary Nichols has owned a home in the 79th District for 30 years.  Mary’s husband, Bob Nichols, retired in 2004 as a captain from the Maryland Heights Police. In 2005 he was elected as a Director with the Maryland Heights Fire Protection District and now serves as President of the Board.

In January 1989 Mary Nichols took the Missouri Licensing test for Residential Real Estate Salesperson, passed, and placed her license with Gundaker Realtors, now know as Coldwell Banker Gundaker. Mary is a member of the Million Dollar Club and has helped many happy owners find their new home in Maryland Heights and surrounding areas.

My name is Eileen McGeoghegan, Democratic candidate for State Representative in the 77th District.  The 77th District area has previously been the home of such notable members of the Missouri General Assembly as Robert Young, Patrick Hickey, Michael Foley and now Michael Corcoran.  Our incumbent Representative is not running due to term limits.

I was taught that one person can make a difference.  I’m running because our families are hurting and our State and Communities are in fiscal crisis.  It it time to start working together and putting forward common sense solutions.  When we do, we will have the resources we need to get Missouri moving again, put families back to work, and restore the cuts our schools have suffered.

Stacey has repeatedly taken action by fighting for true progressive policies, equality and justice.

Elected to the 73rd District in November 2009, Stacey took the lead in 2010 to fight voter ID legislation which would prevent over 200,000 Missourians from being able to vote.  She has sponsored pay equity, domestic violence, autism support legislation along with a bill requiring pharmacists to fill legal prescriptions.

Stacey also works as a co-sponsor to pass the Missouri Non-Discrimination Act, which would prevent discrimination in employment and housing due to sexual orientation.

Prior to her public service, Stacey was the executive director and a founder of Harriett’s List and worked on several years on staff with the DNC and Missouri Democratic Party as the statewide women’s vote director.

A retired flight attendant, she began her activism career by working with Governor Bob Holden and the Million Mom March/Brady Campaign in 2001 on legislation to reduce gun violence.  She is married to Burt Newman, an attorney in private practice.  They have a daughter, Sophie - a senior at Clayton High School, son Drew and daughter-in-law Margo and can’t wait to be grandparents in November.
